Coronation of the Virgin, Lincoln Cathedral Roof Boss 11cm High

SKU FMS-32
Coronation of the Virgin roof boss. Lincoln Cathedral, choir. c.1260. This is a particularly lovely piece of work, the figures are sensitively carved and the drapery convincingly realistic and graceful. The boss is quite a deep one, being the junction between vaulting ribs of a tall section. Oddly, the carving is slightly askew to the central vaulting rib. A flaw in the original block of stone may have come to light as work progressed and forced the mason to re-set out his design accordingly - such changes of plan were not uncommon and are a fascinating insight into working practices of the time. Close examination of the boss reveals it was once brightly painted. Hand Crafted in the UK.
