The cult of the Virgin Mary gained widespread appeal throughout Europe in the medieval period, with many shrines to her achieving international popularity. Among the most celebrated Marian shrines in England were Walsingham in Norfolk and Our Lady Undercroft at Canterbury Cathedral. While in France, major shrines at Chatres, Rocamadour and Tombelaine were extremely popular. At all of these shrines, pilgrims would have purchased souvenir badges such as this fine example.
